The Culture Thing’s purpose
is to broaden our knowledge of history, science, and the arts by direct experience.
While experiencing different events, the leaders guide them in recognizing the beauty of God in creation, in human
creativity, and in the human story, and introduce and open for discussion the concept of “worldview” and the difference
a Christian worldview can make. Through the experience, the sponsors and the
young people invest in one another’s lives.
This
past July we journeyed to the Chicago area for a 7-day experience. We spent most
of the evenings presenting the home at Parkview Christian Church’s VBS. During
the days, we took in the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, the Oriental Museum at the University of Chicago, the Brookfield
Zoo, as well as the Museum of Science & Industry. We spent a day working
at a Thrift Store for Restoration Ministry, which assists former prisoners get a start back into society once released. We attended a Hip-Hop worship service, where local artists performed and God was praised
and worshipped in a way unfamiliar to most of our group.
This
fall, we are planning a shorter trip to either Terre Haute, IN or Indianapolis, IN.
We are looking to take in a play or symphony.
